Step-by-Step Apostille Document Process

Stage 1: Document Authentication

1. Non-Educational Documents

Documents such as Birth Certificates, Marriage Certificates, Death Certificates, Single Status Affidavits, and Driving Licenses must first be authenticated by the State Home Department or Union Territory. The authentication must include the seal and signature of the designated official and the department’s stamp.

2. Educational Documents

Educational documents must be authenticated by the State Department of Education of the respective State Government or Union Territory. The seal and signature of the designated authority are mandatory for verification.

3. Commercial Documents

These documents should first be pre-authenticated by the relevant Chamber of Commerce. A rubber stamp with the name and designation of the authorized signatory must be affixed to each document.

Stage 2: Attestation / Legalization by MEA

After State or Chamber-level authentication, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) legalizes the documents. The MEA confirms the signature and seal of the designated authority but does not take responsibility for the content of the document.

Required Documents for Apostille

  • The original document that needs to be apostilled.
  • Photocopy or scan of the passport (first and last pages).
  • Aadhar Card or Voter ID, if passport is unavailable.
